Arusha Town

Arusha town is the gateway to the Northern Circuit, and the start of your family's time together in Tanzania.

Day 1
Arusha: The Family Arrives
Your flight lands at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your guide meets you at the gate. The drive into Arusha takes about an hour, past coffee farms and the lower slopes of Mount Meru. You check into your property in the early afternoon, with the rest of the day at your own pace to rest, unpack, and settle in. Before dinner, your guide runs through the days ahead over drinks on the terrace, confirming routes, pace, and what each family member wants most from the Northern Circuit. Tonight is about recovering from travel, not covering ground. Tomorrow the parks begin.

Fly to Northern Serengeti

Breakfast comes first, then a ten minute transfer to Arusha airport for the flight north. From the air, the plains open up below — the Serengeti, and beyond it, the reason this park anchors every serious Tanzania itinerary: the Great Migration, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest moving across the Northern Serengeti in a pattern older than any of the roads used to chase it. Landing changes the pace of the trip. This is where the family stops sightseeing and starts noticing — the first shift from watching a place to being in it. Three nights here are spent at Songa Luxury Tented Camp by Legendary Collection, where the deck looks straight onto open country. The guiding team knows this transition matters as much for a nine year old as for a grandparent, and they read the group accordingly — slowing down for questions, adjusting the drive for attention spans, matching pace to the family rather than the clock. Day 3
Full Day in the Northern Serengeti

Explore the Northern Serengeti

Today is a full day out in the northern Serengeti, tracking resident game and the big cats that hold territory near the Mara River. Your guide sets the schedule around light and movement: out early for the sunrise, when predators are most active, and out again as the sun drops, when the plains turn gold and the cats move again. Between drives, you position near the river for a chance at a crossing — one of the most dramatic sights on the entire circuit, wildebeest and zebra committing to the water in the middle of the day. You return to Songa Luxury Tented Camp for meals and rest between game drives, with the option to spend time at your own pace on camp grounds when you are not out on the vehicle. This day sits at the heart of the trip — less about covering ground, more about staying with what you find.
Day 4
A Day in the Serengeti Bush

Final Game Drive in Northern Serengeti

You leave camp with a packed hot lunch. Today, meals happen in the bush, not at a table. Your guide finds a spot under a tree with a clear view and the vehicle parked nearby, and you eat there together, plates on your laps, the plains open in every direction. There is no schedule pressing on this day. Conversation moves at its own pace, the way it does when everyone is looking outward instead of at a phone. Parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, talk about things that do not usually get said at home. Some of what surfaces is easy. Some of it is not. The Serengeti does not ask you to resolve it, only to sit with it, together, in the open air. By the time you arrive at Songa Luxury Tented Camp for the night, something in the group has settled. This is the day the family will talk about for years, the one that gets passed down: not a photograph, but a memory of sitting in the bush together and being, for a few hours, simply a family.

West to Lion Country

Drive to Western Serengeti

This morning, you leave Northern Serengeti behind and head west to Nyasirori, known among guides as lion country. Large prides hold territory here, and the acacias along the plains are a favorite perch for tree-climbing lions. Your luxury tented camp comes with a private vehicle and safari guide for the full stay, and there is no set schedule. You set the pace, whether that means a long game drive tracking a pride on the move or watching the plains for a hunt to unfold. It is a fitting close: after three nights immersed in the north, your final stretch in the Serengeti is built entirely around your own rhythm, the true measure of the luxury of time.
Day 6
Serengeti: One Last Look

Magic of the Northen Serengeti

This morning is your last game drive here, and your guide plans it around what you have not yet seen. Maybe that means a return to the plains near Seronera, where the cats tend to gather. Maybe it means one more pass along a stretch of river you noticed yesterday. The pace is unhurried. There is no checklist left to finish, no species left to tick — only the chance to sit with what six days in this country have already given you. Afterward, time at your own pace before your departure, to pack, reflect, and let the Serengeti settle in before you leave it. This is the last full day of The Luxury of Time, and it asks for nothing more than your attention.

Serengeti to the World Beyond
Breakfast is unhurried, taken at your own pace before the drive to Grumeti Airstrip. From there, a scenic flight lifts you out over the plains toward Kilimanjaro International Airport or on to Zanzibar Island, your next chapter waiting either way. This is not the end of the map. East Africa Safari Guides works across the whole region, and this final leg is where we plan what comes next: Southern Tanzania, Western Tanzania, the Maasai Mara across the border in Kenya, or gorilla trekking in Uganda. What people ask before they book.

We are traveling with children — is a week entirely in the Serengeti too much for a family, or should we expect the days to blend together?
The pace is built to avoid that. Day 3 stays close to camp tracking resident game and the big cats near the Mara River, Day 4 moves the whole day into the bush with a packed hot lunch under a tree, and Day 5 shifts west to Nyasirori's lion country, so the terrain and the rhythm change daily even though you never leave the Serengeti. For a family group, that variety matters more than covering more ground, and Day 6 is deliberately left open, planned around whatever your children have not yet seen rather than a fixed checklist.
Since this is dry season, June through October, will the Northern Serengeti and the Mara River actually deliver good cat sightings, or is that more of a wildebeest-crossing pitch?
This itinerary is built around resident game and territorial cats, not the crossing itself. Day 3 specifically tracks big cats holding territory near the Mara River, which is a dry-season pattern since resident lion and leopard prides stay put around permanent water while migratory herds move through. Day 5 adds Nyasirori, an area guides know for large, stable lion prides regardless of where the wildebeest happen to be that week.
How much of this trip is spent in vehicles versus actually out with a guide on the ground, given it is called an Overland Safari?
Most of your time is on the ground with your guide rather than in transit. After the Day 1 drive from Kilimanjaro into Arusha and the short flight north on Day 2, Days 3 through 6 are full days based in and around the Serengeti with no long overland legs between camps, including a bush lunch on Day 4 taken under a tree rather than back at camp. The only other transfer is the short flight out from Grumeti Airstrip on Day 7.
