Kudos to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for the remarkable project of relocating 21 endangered Black Rhinos from three conservation parks: Lewa Downs, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, and Nairobi National Park. This program, initiated by the Kenyan Government in January 2024, aims to control the population of Black Rhinos in these conservancies and enhance their breeding opportunities. Due to being solitary animals, Black Rhinos require a wider area to disperse – Translocation of 21 Black Rhinos to Loisaba Conservancy.

Why is the relocation of black rhinos in Kenya very important?

Now, the security of the 21 Black Rhinos will be maximized. Loisaba Conservancy, where the rhinos are kept, is located in the Northern Laikipia Plateau in Kenya. It is owned by the Loisaba Community Trust, which focuses on ecological and wildlife conservation and is overseen by the Kenyan government. Currently, Kenya is home to more than 900 rhinos, a significant increase from the approximately 240 that existed in 1984. This progress has been achieved through the concerted efforts of the Kenyan Government Tourism Board and private entities.

Heightened security measures and excellent conservation policies in Kenya have helped the country host the third-largest rhino population in Africa, second only to South Africa and Namibia. The world is currently witnessing a significant decline in rhino populations. According to the Rhino Conservation Charity, Save The Rhino Organization, headquartered in London (UK), there are now fewer than 7,000 rhinos left on Earth, all of them located in Africa.
Kenya boasts a larger number of private parks and national parks and is thus striving to increase the rhino population to over 2,000 in the coming years.

These 21 Black Rhino translocations were also funded by the Elewana Collection, to whom the East Africa Safari Guides team is happy to continue sending their clients. They can experience the sightseeing of African Black Rhinos at Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp, Elewana Loisaba Lodo Springs, and Elewana Loisaba Star Beds. This is a way of appreciating Elewana Collection’s commitment to nature conservation and giving back to the communities.
