The heart of the southern wild.
“We select Roho ya Selous for clients seeking the thrill of the unexplored south. Translating to the ‘Heart of Selous,’ this contemporary canvas sanctuary places you in the center of Nyerere National Park, offering an exquisite balance of water-based exploration and rugged predator tracking far removed from the northern crowds.”
Set on a peninsula overlooking Lake Nzerakera, a massive waterway linked to the Rufiji River, the camp features just eight beautifully appointed canvas tents. The design is bright and contemporary, utilizing open mesh to capture the river breeze, stone floors, and a brilliant over-bed cooling system to ensure absolute comfort in the warm southern climate.
Because Nyerere National Park is so vast and uncrowded, the luxury here is defined by freedom of movement. You can shift seamlessly from tracking packs of endangered African wild dogs in an open 4×4 to drifting silently in a boat past pods of bathing hippos, returning to camp for a private dinner beneath a canopy of stars.

How you will spend your unhurried days at this contemporary sanctuary.
Leave the dusty trails behind and board a private motorboat to navigate the vast Rufiji River system, getting incredibly close to hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds.
Nyerere is one of the last great strongholds for the endangered African painted dog. Spend your morning tracking these highly intelligent, fascinating predators.
Engage in the historic tradition of the South by stepping out of the vehicle and exploring the palm-fringed lakes and woodlands entirely on foot.
Preparing for your journey with East Africa Safari Guides ensures that your transition into the heartof the wild—and onto the shores of the Indian Ocean—is as smooth as the savannah breeze. Please review the following requirements to ensure a seamless entry into Tanzania and Kenya
Passport & Visa Requirement
Passport Validity:
Your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond your intended departure date. Ensure you have at least three (3) blank visa pages to accommodate entry and exit stamps for both the mainland and island territories.
Tanzania & Zanzibar (Including Pemba & Mafia):
All U.S. and Canadian passport holders require a tourist visa for entry. While Tanzania and Zanzibar share federal immigration status, the islands maintain their own entry checkpoints.
Host Information (when prompted):
Host: East Africa Safari Guides Ltd.
Address: 11512, Levolosi, Arusha – Tanzania
Contact: +255 753 744 283 / +255 757 149 848, info@easguides.travel
Kenya Entry (Electronic Travel Authority):
Kenya has replaced traditional visas with an Electronic Travel Authority (eTA). All travelers, including infants and children, must obtain an eTA via etakenya.go.ke prior to departure.
Health & Wellness
Vaccinations & Malaria: East Africa is a malaria-endemic region. We recommend consulting a travel medicine specialist at least 8 weeks prior to travel to discuss prophylaxis (such as Malarone).
Yellow Fever Protocols: A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission (including a transit of more than 12 hours). If you are flying directly from Europe or North America into Tanzania, the vaccine is generally not required but is often recommended. Note: Proof of vaccination is frequently checked when flying between Nairobi and Arusha, or when arriving in Zanzibar from certain regions.
Special Considerations for the Islands (Zanzibar, Pemba & Mafia)
The islands offer a different pace and set of customs than the mainland.
Marine & Conservation Fees
Exploring the pristine waters of our marine parks requires specific daily conservation permits. These fees directly support the preservation of our coral reefs and the livelihoods of local fishing communities.
Mafia Island Marine Park:
Visitors staying within the Marine Park boundaries (the Utende area) or visiting the Whale Shark zones must pay a daily conservation fee.
Pemba (Misali Island & Pemba Channel):
As of late 2025, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has updated its fee structure for protected marine areas.
Mandatory Zanzibar Inbound Travel Insurance
All international visitors entering the Zanzibar Archipelago (including Unguja, Pemba, and Mafia) must hold a mandatory insurance policy issued by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC). This is a government requirement regardless of any existing global travel insurance you may hold.
Traveling with Families & Children
For our guests traveling with younger explorers, East Africa is a magnificent classroom.
Professional Advice for the Discerning Traveler
A Note on “Island Time”: While East Africa Safari Guides maintains rigorous standards of punctuality, the islands of Pemba and Mafia operate on a gentler rhythm. We invite you to embrace this “Pole Pole” (slowly, slowly) philosophy the moment you step off the plane.
Allow our team to seamlessly integrate Roho ya Selous into your bespoke slow safari itinerary.
