What to do in Mahale?

The main goal is usually to get to a wild chimpanzee troop, whose complicated political and social maneuverings take place just a few feet away from the tour groups. On twisting woodland pathways, guides reveal life beyond the chimps, including nine other primate species, insects not seen elsewhere, and a pharmacopeia of medicinal plants.

The lake is also an excellent natural habitat to explore. Explore the lake by kayaking towards the Congo at sunrise, feeling the thrill of diving off the dhow into its sunset seas, and seeing hippos moonwalk in the depths.

A visit to Katumbi on the park's border provides an opportunity to experience a Lake Tanganyika community and see the activities of the Nomad Trust. You can visit the primary school, where the Nomad Trust has built and outfitted classrooms and installed solar electricity, as well as the community clinic, which provides crucial healthcare ranging from first aid to midwifery services.
